In our turnkey per-m² prices, lighting accounts for about 8% on an outdoor pitch and 6% on an indoor pitch. The amounts below show the budget set aside for lighting on a pitch built from scratch; if a higher tier is requested, the difference is quoted as an extra item. For installation on an existing pitch, the package prices above apply.

How Many Lux Does a Football Pitch Need, and How Many Floodlights?

Sports lighting is specified by the European standard EN 12193, adopted in Türkiye as TS EN 12193. The standard defines three classes according to the level of play; choosing a package is really choosing which class your lighting should be close to.

Class III · Training and recreation

School, residential compound and amateur training use. On an outdoor football field, average horizontal illuminance is typically around 75 lx. Because the ball is fast and the pitch is small in small-sided football, operators design well above this lower limit; that is why the value calculated for the basic package is higher.

Class II · Club and league matches

Regional leagues, club matches and pitches rented out regularly. On an outdoor football field the typical average is around 200 lx, with more even light required across every point of the pitch. Our commercial standard package targets this level.

Class I · High-level competition

Top-level tournaments and matches with spectators. On an outdoor football field the typical average is around 500 lx, with the highest uniformity. If matches are recorded or broadcast, flicker-free light for the camera is added; our tournament package is designed close to this level.

Class values are the typical levels the standard gives for football; for indoor halls the standard sets higher values. Projects are based on the current text of the standard and a photometric calculation.

Average illuminance was calculated with a rough check formula: total power (W) × 130 lm/W × 0,45 utilization factor ÷ area (m²). Monthly electricity: 5 hours a day, 30 days, example price of 5 ₺/kWh. Quantities and heights are typical examples; the exact layout is set by a site-specific photometric calculation.

Electrical Infrastructure

Control Panel, Cabling, Earthing and Electricity Connection

The part most often left out of quotes is the installation behind the floodlight. The control panel, cabling and earthing together make up about 27% of the package price.

Control Panel and Automation

Circuit breakers, a residual current device (RCD), contactors and an astronomical time switch. Splitting the floodlights into two circuits, half pitch and full pitch, cuts consumption during training hours. Share of the package: 10%.

Underground Cabling

Cables run inside corrugated conduit through a trench to the poles. The cross-section is calculated from the installed load and the distance between panel and pole; on long runs it is increased to limit voltage drop. Share of the package: 12%, rising linearly with cable length.

Earthing (grounding)

Every pole is earthed and bonded to the main earthing bar. Because the perimeter fence is metal, earthing and residual current protection are a direct life-safety item; earth resistance should be measured at handover. Share of the package: 5%.

Connection and Capacity Upgrade

A new pitch needs an electricity connection, and an existing facility often needs a capacity upgrade. Application, connection and deposit fees depend on the distribution company's tariff. They are not included in the package prices and should appear as a separate line in the quote.

5 ₺/kWh is an example unit price including taxes (Turkish tariff); it varies with your supply tariff. We assumed 5 hours a day on an outdoor pitch, 10 hours on an indoor pitch and 30 days of use per month. Annual cost = monthly cost × 12.

The Difference in Lighting Between Outdoor and Indoor Football Pitches

On an outdoor pitch, light comes from poles along the edge of the pitch at a set angle. Cost is driven by pole height, foundations and wind load; the lights are on only in the evening. Because light spilling off the pitch reaches neighboring plots, the choice of optics matters.

On an indoor pitch the pole item all but disappears; the fixtures hang from the roof trusses. On the other hand, because the light travels a shorter distance, more fixtures of lower wattage are used, and scaffolding or a platform is needed for installation. The typical layout on a 25×45 m indoor pitch is 22 × 250 W, i.e. 5,5 kW.

The real difference is in operating cost. Under an opaque roof the fixtures are on during the day as well; in our calculation we took 10 hours of daily use for the indoor pitch, which gave a monthly cost of ₺8.250. A translucent membrane roof and daylight-sensor control bring this amount down.

Retrofitting Halogen and Metal Halide Floodlights to LED

Most older pitches still run 1.000 W metal halide or halogen floodlights. These lamps take minutes to warm up to full output when switched on, dim over time and, with their ballast, draw more than their rated power.

If the poles and cabling are sound, only the fixtures, control panel and installation are renewed in a retrofit. The bracket and pole connection are still checked, as the new fixture's weight and wind area may differ from the old one.

LED's second gain is in operation: the light comes on at full output instantly, switching it off and on between matches does not wear the lamp, and a dimmable driver can cut consumption in quiet hours. The calculation below shows only the saving from the difference in power; lower lamp replacement and maintenance costs are not included.

Player and Neighbor Comfort

Glare and Light Spill onto Neighboring Plots

Powerful but poorly aimed light both dazzles players and draws complaints. Most fixes are cheap before installation and expensive after it.

Asymmetric Optics

Throws the light forward at an angle close to horizontal, so it reaches the middle of the pitch without the floodlight being tilted up too far. Both glare and light spilling off the pitch are reduced.

Correct Tilt Angle

The higher a floodlight is tilted, the closer the light gets to players' eye level and to neighboring façades. Angles are set according to the photometric calculation and locked after installation.

Visors and Back-Light Shields

Cuts the light escaping to the side that does not face the pitch. On poles along an edge facing a road, housing or a school, it makes a big difference for a small extra cost.

Pole Height

On a low pole the floodlight has to be tilted up further. A taller pole brings the light down more steeply, reducing glare but increasing pole and foundation cost.

Time Switch and Dimming

Switching the lights off automatically after the last booking and dimming them in quiet hours cuts both the bill and late-night complaints.

Neighboring Façade Check

During the site visit, windows and roads around the pitch are marked, and the light falling in those directions is checked in the calculation. Replacing fixtures later costs more than this calculation.

Factors That Change the Lighting Price

These eight factors usually explain the gap between two lighting quotes for pitches of the same size.

Questions About Football Pitch Lighting

Partly, on most pitches. Fence posts are usually 4–6 m tall, so to spread the light evenly across the pitch the posts are often extended or separate poles are added at the corners. Before mounting, the post's wall thickness, its foundation and the wind load of the floodlight are checked. If they pass, the pole item in the package drops noticeably.

It does if the installed load exceeds your current contracted capacity. The Commercial Standard package draws about 4,8 kW; if, together with changing rooms, hot water and heating, the total load goes above the contracted capacity, an upgrade application is made to the electricity distribution company. Connection fees and deposits depend on the local utility's tariff and are not included in the package prices.

Lifetime is usually stated on the product datasheet as an L70 or L80 value, i.e. the number of hours until the luminous flux drops to a given percentage. On a pitch lit 5 hours a day, a rating of 50.000 hours corresponds to roughly 27 years. In practice the driver sets the lifetime first; a failed fixture is replaced on its own, without dismantling the whole system.

On a new pitch, pole foundations and cable trenches are dug during the groundworks, and the concrete foundations are left to cure. On a pitch where the poles are already in place, mounting, panel connection, aiming and lux measurement usually take a few working days. If a capacity upgrade is needed, the utility's approval time is added to the schedule separately.

First the floodlight's tilt angle is reduced and its direction corrected. If that is not enough, fixtures with asymmetric optics, visors or back-light shields are added. If neighboring façades are marked in the calculation before installation, no correction cost arises later; switching the lights off automatically at a set time also heads off complaints.

With low-quality drivers the light flickers faster than the eye can notice. A camera picks this flicker up as horizontal bands and pulsing in the footage, especially at high frame rates and in slow motion. On a pitch where a recording or live-streaming system will be installed, fixtures with low-flicker drivers are chosen; this is one of the items that raises the price of the tournament tier.

Yes, if it is planned from the start. Cable cross-sections, panel capacity and pole positions can be built for the target tier, with floodlights added in stages. Thin cabling and a small panel sized for the basic package, however, have to be redone during an upgrade; in that case the amount saved on the initial investment is paid back in the second phase.

With a dimmable LED driver, consumption falls roughly in proportion to the light level. In the Commercial Standard package, dimming the lights to 50% for 2 hours a day saves about 144 kWh a month, or ₺720 at an example price of 5 ₺/kWh (4,8 kW × 0,5 × 2 hours × 30 days).

If the roof lets light through (translucent membrane, roof lights), some of the fixtures can be switched off during daylight hours; under an opaque panel roof they stay on all day. That is why we assumed 10 hours of daily use in the indoor pitch cost calculation. With daylight-sensor control, only the fixture groups that are needed are switched on.
