What Is Acrylic Surfacing?
Acrylic surfacing is a sports flooring system based on water-based acrylic resin, applied coat by coat over a sound asphalt or concrete substructure. It is the most widely used hard surface for tennis, basketball and volleyball courts worldwide.
The greatest advantage of the system is that it does not require breaking out the existing asphalt. Once cracks and hollows in the surface have been made good with acrylic patching compound, the primer, filler and color coats are applied in sequence; within a few days the court has a brand-new surface.
Each coat bonds chemically to the one beneath it. The resulting surface, roughly 2–3 mm thick, offers a balanced playing texture that is non-slip even when wet, keeps ball bounce consistent and does not punish the soles of shoes.
From school yards to residential complexes, from club facilities to hotels and residences, we apply it both in new court construction and in the renovation of worn asphalt courts.
How Is an Acrylic Surface Built Up, Layer by Layer?

Compacted granular fill and the one-way fall that sheds water away.
The total acrylic coating thickness is roughly 2 – 3 mm. This thin layer creates a smooth, non-slip, colored surface without passing the hardness of the asphalt straight through to the playing surface. In cushioned systems, together with the elastic intermediate layer, the thickness rises to 4 – 6 mm.

Acrylic is the first choice on any court where the ball must bounce true and the foot must grip under control.
Basketball Court
Because the ball has to bounce to the same height at every point, the standard surface for basketball is acrylic. It also stands up to heavy use under the hoop.
Tennis Court
This is exactly what we call a hard court. By varying the amount of filler we can tune the court's pace from slow to fast.
Volleyball & Badminton
In these sports, where sudden stops and changes of direction are frequent, the controlled grip of the acrylic surface prevents slipping and protects the ankle.

Asphalt or Concrete? Which Substructure Is It Applied Over?
Acrylic coating can be applied over both asphalt and concrete substructures; each has its own advantage. The right choice is made according to the court's location and how likely the ground is to move.
Asphalt flexes very slightly with temperature and so tolerates ground movement, and it is generally more economical; this is why asphalt is the most common choice for outdoor sports courts. Before application the asphalt must have cured and the bitumen sheen on the surface must have gone.
Concrete is more rigid; if the joint layout is not right, the cracks that form can in time show through to the coating. When applying over concrete we use a special cement-based primer to reduce this risk.
Whichever substructure you have, the critical point is the same: the correct fall. No coating lasts long on a court where water ponds; at the site visit this is the first thing we measure.

In short: For predominantly basketball, tennis and volleyball use, acrylic is the right choice; for football and five-a-side use, artificial turf; for areas focused on running and athletics, tartan. Concrete paint only makes sense for short-term, low-budget solutions — it has to be renewed every few years.

Laying a new asphalt substructure costs roughly 700 – 1.200 ₺/m² and is added on top of the coating price above. If you already have sound asphalt this item disappears entirely — that is where the acrylic system saves you the most.

Common Questions About Acrylic Surfacing
Yes — this is the greatest advantage of the acrylic system. If the asphalt is sound, meaning there is no settlement, subsidence or deep cracking, the coating is applied directly over it; there is no need to break out the asphalt. Fine surface cracks and hollows are first filled with acrylic patching compound and leveled.
No. The oils within newly laid asphalt need to rise to the surface and evaporate; otherwise the coating will not bond. Depending on the season and air temperature we usually allow a curing period of 21–28 days. Before application we check that no bitumen sheen is left on the surface.
In a standard system the total dry film thickness is roughly 2–3 mm. In cushioned systems, together with the elastic intermediate layer, this rises to 4–6 mm. Thickness is directly related to the number of coats and the tier selected.
On a standard court the work usually takes 5–10 days. The main factor setting the duration is the drying time of the coats: each coat must dry fully before the next is applied. In rainy weather or on days of high humidity the work can take longer.
With the right substructure and normal use, 6–10 years is expected. When a court reaches the end of its life and the substructure is still sound, there is no need to strip the whole system: the surface is cleaned and only the color coats and line marking are renewed, returning the court to its original appearance.
The acrylic surface is waterproof and sheds water along the fall. On a court laid to the correct fall, the surface dries and is ready for play shortly after the rain stops. Compared with alternatives that hold water, this markedly increases the court's usable time over the year.
Yes. We can mark basketball, tennis, volleyball and badminton lines together on the same surface in different colors. This is the most popular solution for school and residential courts; a single investment lets several sports be played.
It depends on the intended use. In basketball, tennis and volleyball the ball has to bounce true, so acrylic is clearly ahead. For football and five-a-side use, artificial turf is the right choice. On multipurpose school and residential courts acrylic stands out because it allows several sports on a single surface.
No, it is one of the easiest sports surfaces to look after. Washing it a few times a year with a soft brush and pressurized water and clearing away leaves and soil deposits is enough. It does not need sand grooming or infill topping up the way artificial turf does.
